Your Spiritual Curriculum

Through discipline [musar], I choose to live as if I can close the gap between my real self and my ideal self.  The first step is to identify 13 qualities [midot] I hope to refine [tikun] through practice and to build a 13-week curriculum around those virtues.

Qualities of Character

The Hebrew word MIDAH [mee’DAH] originally referred generally to a measure or quantity.  In early rabbinic writings, the sages use the word more specifically to refer to measurable qualities of character or attributes of the Divine.  As human beings “made in the image of God,” and called upon to live into “the likeness” of godliness. We do so one MIDAH (or pair of MIDOT) at a time.  As unique, evolving individuals, the MIDOT we are called to practice will vary from person to person and year to year.   Below is a set of 22 MIDOT.  Begin by choosing 13  that you are most drawn to or inspired by for the first quarter of this year.
