Music
Music happens when waves of sound meet the shores of consciousness. From the eden of infinite possibilities comes four melodic rivers: “old,” “new,” “borrowed,” and “blue.”
Go “old” for a sampling of ‘traditional’ melodies to adorn special occasions – sabbaths, holidays, and rites of passage. Go “new” to access traditional texts retranslated and set to original music. I “borrowed” and adapted familiar favorites from American folk and rock genres and for inclusion in contemporary worship. In “blue” you’ll find a some new blues tunes.
Whether inherited, invented, or borrowed, music, like musar, is a means of building character and community. Making music is a form of hidur mitzvah, adorning and enriching life with creativity, beauty, and connection. Havah nashirah – come lets sing together.
“I pray, my God, that these things never end:
the [music of] sea, sand, and sky,
the rushing sounds of the waters,
the crashing thunder of the heavens,
the prayerful-songs of the human heart.”
– Hannah Senesh
